Leeward Islands Air Transport Services, also known as LIAT continues to make impressive strides in growing its regional reach. This week, the airline celebrated its inaugural flight to St. Maarten—a destination that was a longstanding part of LIAT's network.
Departing from Antigua and Barbuda's V.C. Bird International Airport (ANU) just after noon, the flight landed at Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) about 30 minutes later, with media and dignitaries onboard.
A short ceremony marked the event, with officials from St. Maarten and Antigua and Barbuda in attendance. Brian Mingo, CEO of Princess Juliana International Airport, welcomed the guests warmly and commended LIAT for the flight's high-quality service.
Mingo highlighted the importance of collaboration between the nations for shared prosperity.
LIAT’s Chief Financial Officer, Conley Ibrahim, expressed gratitude for the occasion, acknowledging everyone who contributed to the milestone. He commented that the addition of St. Maarten marks a key step in reestablishing LIAT’s connections within the region.
Antiguan Ambassador Brian Challenger conveyed his excitement, stating, “We are back, and we are here to stay. We look forward to collaborating with our partners and are thrilled to be part of this exciting journey.”
Grisha S. Heyliger-Marten, St. Maarten’s Tourism Minister, also shared her enthusiasm. “Today is a wonderful day. It’s always a pleasure to welcome back old friends. We are witnessing the revival of our cherished regional airline, akin to a phoenix rising, coinciding with the airport’s upgrades.”
“This new flight offers significant advantages for St. Maarten. As we welcome Liat 2020 back to our shores, we reaffirm our dedication to regional travel. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Liat 2020 team for making this day a reality. Let’s celebrate this new chapter and continue to strengthen our connections,” she said.
The flight to St. Maarten follows earlier inaugural flights to Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, and St. Kitts and Nevis, signaling a strong return for LIAT.
Additional destinations will be added to the airline’s route map in the upcoming weeks.
